A little bit more about Matt Smith
Matt Smith has just curated the acclaimed show of reclaimed art at local Hove Museum called ‘Precious’. After Matt found his way from the V&A’s conservation department to the Science Museum where was exposed to their storerooms, the roots of his work could begin. With his pieces formed, fired and decorated, he brings together many of his life experiences. His ceramics are a mass of forms that fuse together creating tableaux that are at the same time both exquisite and amusing: Ladies legs stick out of work and kitsch gold lapelled gents sport animal trophy heads. Smith remarks that “... there is a joy to the confusion and a celebration of the unexpected”. Once all glazed up, it is hard to notice where one form starts and others finish.
