A little bit more about Sten & Lex
Sten & Lex have been doing stencils on the street since 2000 and today their work is part of the urban landscape in their home town of Rome and European cities; Paris, Barcelona, London, Berlin, Venice and Milan.
During that early period in Rome, and Italy in general, there didn’t exist a strong stencil culture such as there was in France and Sten & Lex may be considered as the pioneers of "Stencil Graffiti" in Italy and were the first to be considered "stencil artists".
The duo are best known in the history of stencil making for introducing the halftone stencil technique where the main part of their stencil portraits are composed by thousands of hand cut pixels, dots, and lines that require looking at from a distance.
Many of their works are inspired by the saints and Popes from Italian Christian culture but most recently they have produced portraits from people they have photographed themselves and then painted on wood using their halftone technique in back and white.
In 2008 Sten & Lex were invited by Banksy to take part in the Can's Festival near Waterloo Station, London. Their piece ‘Saint’ depicting Lex with a golden halo appeared close to Banksy's Buddha. The same year they took part in the Nuart Festival, a huge Street Art Festival together with Blek le Rat, Nick Walker, Dolk, D Face, and Chris Stain.
Sten & Lex met in hospital where they were both admitted due to broken legs.
Sten & Lex currently work from a studio in Rome, Italy.
